Interim county boss expected to be named next week

After more than 50 minutes in a closed-door discussion at a special called meeting Tuesday, Cherokee County Council still has no interim administrator.

Cherokee County Council Chairman Tim Spencer said council members have “to get together on a few things.”

Apparently, one of those things is the compensation for the interim. Council members are apparently split on just how much to pay that person, who could be on the job for as long as six months while council searches for a new administrator.

Spencer did say that council would definitely name an interim at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Council thought they had their interim but Cherokee County Finance Director Ann Boggs turned down the offer last week and has tendered her resignation. Boggs had been on the job since 2012.

Council has made progress, though, on a job description for the new administrator.

Council will require applicants to have an undergraduate degree or higher, at least five years experience in government administration and to move their full-time primary residence to the county within 180 days of employment.

Councilman Quay Little also insisted council give a preference to applicants with a degree in public administration.

Outgoing Cherokee County Administrator Holland Belue suggested that the Appalachian Council of Governments be involved in the interview process and that a minimum salary be included in the job description.

The minimum salary for the position is $86,000. Belue currently makes about $10,000 more than that.

Belue’s last day on the job will be Friday, Jan. 19.
