Money missing from magistrate court

Ledger Staff Writer

Authorities are investigating money missing from Cherokee County Magistrate Court.

Cherokee County Administrator Holland Belue said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called last week to investigate after a ‘periodic review’ of the court’s bank statements turned up irregularities.

Belue said the court’s financial records will be audited “to ensure we can account for all funds.”

Belue declined to say how much money is believed to be missing.

He confirmed that two magistrate court employees have been “put on leave without pay.”

He declined to identify the employees.

Belue said the day-to-day operations at magistrates court have not been impacted and said he wants the matter cleared up as soon as possible.

A call to the magistrate’s office was referred to Belue.
