Gaffney gets high marks in season-opening win

The Gaffney Indians knew they were facing a stiff challenge in season opener against the highly-rated T.L. Hanna Yellow Jackets.

And the Indians more than lived up to that challenge by jumping out to a 31-14 halftime lead.

After Hanna scored on its opening second half possession, the Indians answered and held on for an impressive 45-35 win.

Several players stood out for Gaffney. Quarterback Tyshun Sarratt threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior big-play wide-out Dennis Smith hauled in six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

But the biggest star of the night was wide-out D.J. Logan, who caught eight passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 75 yard return on the opening kickoff.

“D.J. had a great game,” Gaffney coach Dan Jones said. “He made big plays for us.”

And the defense was led by linebacker Ashonti Richardson. who was credited with two sacks and an interception he returned for a touchdown.

Defensive end Shemar Van deCruize also had a big game with a 1.5 sacks. Nose tackle Tiger Wood was credited with several big plays. Linemen J.D. Sullivan and Terry Byers each had a fumble recovery, while safety Quez Smith had an interception and cornerback Ty’ron Hopper blocked a punt.

Gaffney co-defensive coordinator Randy Birch said he liked the way the unit “flew to the ball” and their physical play. The defense also stopped Hanna on three fourth downs, giving the ball back to the Gaffney offense.

“We forced turnovers and made some big plays,” Birch said.
