Catherine Long

Spartanburg, S.C. — Catherine Cooksey Long, 85, of 100 Summit Hills, Spartanburg, SC, formerly of Gaffney, died peacefully August 17, 2016 surrounded by family.

Born in Gaffney, S.C., she was the widow of the late Ernest Johnston Long and daughter of the late Charles Worth and Flarra Ester Cooksey. She is survived by her sister, Ann Kautz of San Antonio, Texas.

Receiving her undergraduate degree from Limestone College (Gaffney, S.C.) and her graduate degree from Converse College (Spartanburg, S.C.), she enjoyed twenty-five years of teaching high school English at R-S Central in Rutherfordton, N.C. where she was head of the English Department. As well as her family, she will be missed by the Small Fry Gang of Gaffney, Friends of the Library and all her friends she made over the years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation of Gaffney, S.C.

In addition to her sister, surviving are three sons: Craig Long (Lynn) of Spartanburg, S.C., Chip Long (Diane) of Matthews, N.C. and David Long of Flat Rock, N.C. and two daughters, Kathy Noel (Jeff) of Rock Hill, S.C. and Betsy Klein of Asheville, N.C. and eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Friday, August 26, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, 308 College Drive, Gaffney, SC with the Rev. Jenny Gettys officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
