Father charged in death of his child

Staff Report

A 26-year-old Spartanburg man was booked on a reckless homicide charge in the wake of a Tuesday afternoon vehicle accident on White Plains Road that claimed the life of his 2-year-old daughter.

Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed the charge was filed against Curtis Gray McCraw but could not yet provide the basis or reasoning for the charge. Additional details are expected to be released Wednesday afternoon during McCraw's bond hearing in Cherokee County Magistrate Court.

The charge stems from a 3:10 p.m. Tuesday accident in which a vehicle McCraw was driving left the roadway on White Plains Road and struck a tree. McCraw was transporting three juvenile children, including his 2-year-old daughter Sadie Danielle McCraw, at the time of the incident.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said the young girl died in the trauma center at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at 4:04 p.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy was planned for Wednesday morning to assist in the coroner's investigation.

Fowler noted Tuesday evening that the young girl had been riding in a booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle.

McCraw is currently being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center awaiting his bond hearing.
