Rev. Mrs. Julia Tate

Rev. Mrs. Julia Tate, 92, widow of Lemuel Tate, made a peaceful transition from this Earth to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, surrounded by her family at Bortz Health Care Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Daughter of the late George and Ellen Gibbs, she was born July 31, 1921, at 411 W. Rutledge Ave. in Gaffney, where she resided for the majority of her life. After a brief period of residency at 521 W. Montgomery St., she moved to Michigan to be closer to immediate family members.

Rev. Tate accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Limestone Baptist Church. She accepted her calling into the ministry at the age of 28 at Holy Trinity Righteous Church of God, where she served as pastor for more than 50 years. She was given recognition as Pastor Emeritus in 2009. But her ministry did not end there as she became known for her praise and glorifying the Lord by all who met her in Michigan. Residents and staff at Bortz would seek her for prayer and spiritual encouragement, even in the declining period of her life.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Alice Virginia; sisters, Estelle, Vera and Viola; and brothers Wilbert, Jessie, Robert, James Means and Rosemond.

Left to cherish her memories are her sisters, Pauline Hutley of New Brunswick, N.J., and Lillie Thornton of Flint, Mich.; many nieces, nephews and friends throughout the United States; and special friends, Ruth Hambrick and George and Audrey Morgan, all of Gaffney.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. at Holy Trinity Righteous Church of God on West Claremont Street with Elder Lizzie Bridges officiating. Interment will be in Limestone Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 25, from 5-7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Righteous Church of God.

Arrangements by Foster Funeral Home.
