Horace Whelchel, retired from Vulcan Materials

Horace Homer Whelchel, 84, of 141 Ida Lane, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at his residence.

Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of the late Ida Keenan Whelchel and son of the late Homer Whelchel and Mary Camp Whelchel. He was a United States Army veteran and retired from Vulcan Materials. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 20 years.

Mr. Whelchel was a member of Midway Baptist Church, where he was Deacon Emeritus and Sunday School teacher, and was a member of Gideon’s International.

Surviving are two sons, Butch Whelchel and wife, Pam, and Tim Whelchel and wife, Veree, all of Gaffney; three brothers, Don Whelchel, H.W. (Bud) Whelchel and George Whelchel; two sisters, Elizabeth Patterson and Mary Phillips; four grandchildren, Hope Gault and husband, Joey, Cindy Townsend, Mandy Tate and husband, Jeff, and Brooke Spencer and husband, Josh; and six great-grandchildren, Matt Gault, Macy Gault, Sophie Townsend, Anna Tate, Campbell Spencer and Cade Spencer.

Mr. Whelchel was preceded in death by a daughter, Edith Jane Whelchel; two sisters, Tommie Ann Ruppe and Janelle Robison; a grandson, Daniel J. Whelchel; and a greatgranddaughter, Leighton Reese Spencer.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at Blakely Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Midway Baptist Church with the Revs. Vernon Craig, Danny Emory and Brandon Bowers officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
