Quincy Leland said he was traveling on Ferry Road on his way to pick up a family member when smoke started coming into the passenger compartment of his 1986 Chevrolet Blazer. Leland said he pulled over to the side of the road and popped the hood, but immediately shut the hood when a fire flared up.

Within a few moments, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames and Leland could do nothing but step back to safety.

“I can’t get another me,” he said, “but I can get another car.”

Grassy Pond Volunteer Fire Department firefighters arrived on scene within a few minutes and were able to quickly douse the flames with water from their tanker truck. Regardless, the damage was done. Not a single piece of plastic or fabric was visible inside the vehicle as everything that wasn’t made of metal had melted or burned.

No one was injured.
