Crash victims remembered

Marine and his family from Alabama

EDITOR’S NOTE: Thousands of people travel through Cherokee County every day on Interstate 85. Rarely do we know who they are or where they’re headed, as they travel in anonymity.

But sometimes, for reasons few can explain, journeys are interrupted.

Such was the case on the evening of Sept. 18 when Gaffney and Grassy Pond firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a horrific wreck on Interstate 85 near the 97 Mile Marker.

The crash claimed the lives of a young father, a young mother, and young child. We would later learn the family had been visiting relatives in Alabama and were heading back to Quantico, Va., where the young father served as a U.S. Marine.

Relatives and friends of Cpl. Luther S. Smith IV, Angelica Smith and young Preston Smith will no doubt remember Gaffney in connection to this incident. Below are obituaries from the Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark, Ala., so Gaffney will remember the Smith family.
