An excellent writer who writes from the heart

Living in Charlotte, I always receive my paper several days after publication; so I just sat down to read your column. Not only are you an excellent writer, but write directly from heart.

Your column pushed so many buttons with me. Even though my class of ’72 was near war’s end, I remember the day that Gaffney High found out that Ed had been killed. Everyone was sad because everyone knew “a Sossamon” and back in the good ole’ days in a small town, everyone was family.

I also watched friends, whose draft lottery numbers were low, leave the U.S. for Germany, Vietnam ... it makes me wonder how their life or mine would have been different if they had not “gone away.”

Even though many returned, they were never the same.

The facts you included were heartbreaking, especially those dealing with fathers and sons, multiple brothers, young ages ... all the facts were so, so sad.
