At the PEAK of his game
His trademark dreadlocks aren't the only thing impressive about L.J. Peak's game. He's rated as the 21st best sophomore in the country by Scout.com. If there ever appears to be a can’t miss prospect it’s LJ. Peak.
Peak comes in at 21 in the latest rankings of the top sophomores in the country by Scout.com. That makes Peak the highest nationally rated player ever from Gaffney High School.
He’s the fourth rated swing guard behind Wayne Selden, rated sixth overall; No. 13- rated Jaquan Lyle and No. 19 Tadric Jackson.
Peak received a scholarship offer last year from South Carolina. Other schools of interest, according to the website, include Clemson, Georgetown, Marquette and Tennessee.
Peak has told people his favorites schools are traditional powers North Carolina and Kentucky.
In two years, Peak should be the focus of the biggest recruiting battle ever for a local product.
Andrew Wiggins, a 6-6 swing forward from Huntington, W.V., is the top rated sophmore in the country.
Peak’s stock surely rose in the eyes of the recruiting services after his performance at the Beach Ball Classic.
Peak scored a game-high 40 points on 13-of- 24 shooting, including 6 of 9 3-pointers, in Gaffney’s loss to Ballard.
Peak was particularly impressive in the last minute of the first half when he hit three straight 3s, the first two with 56 and 31 seconds left in the half.
Then, with time running out, Peak grabbed a rebound, dribbled across midcourt and swished a trey from about 35 feet as the buzzer sounded, cutting the Ballard lead to 46-37 at the half.
That effort prompted normally reserved Gaffney head coach Mark Huff to gush, “God put people on earth to do certain things and he put L.J. on earth to play basketball. He did a great job for us and he’s just special.”
The 40 points Peak posted tied him for 11th all time at the Beach Ball.
Peak also has made a name for himself nationally by playing for the Forest City, N.C. Heat, one of the top AAU teams in the country.
