Local all-stars sent packing after two straight losses

The Gaffney Major League state champions’ stay at the Cal Ripken League Southeast Regional was a brief one.

The local all-stars managed just five hits in two games and were eliminated after a 7-0 loss to Hamilton, Bermuda on Saturday.

The loss didn’t diminish the effort of starting pitcher Matthew Overton, who went six strong innings.

Gaffney manager Bob Humphries said the team just couldn’t get their bats going.

With a roster stacked with 11 year olds, Humphries said he hopes the regional tournament serves as a learning experience.

“They know what it’s like in the regional now,” he said. “We are the South Carolina state champions and nobody can take that away from the players.”
