Bertha Smith

Bertha Swofford Mintz Smith, 88, of 115 Brittany Road, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 12, 2010, at her home.

Born in Blacksburg, she was the daughter of the late Herschel Frank Mintz and Bertha Bonita Wood Mintz. Mrs. Smith was a registered nurse, graduating from Greenville Nursing College in 1941. She was the former Director of Nurses at Cherokee Memorial Hospital and the former director of the Geriatric Center, now known as Peachtree. She retired from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she worked in the cardiology department and was a member of the American Nursing Association.

Mrs. Smith was a member of West End Baptist Church and the Senior Citizens Club. She loved being a nurse and was loved by her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra S. Huggin and husband, John, and Bobbie Smith, all of Gaffney; two brothers, Thomas Max Mintz and wife, Carolyn, of Blacksburg and Sam Herbert Mintz and wife, Patty, of Gastonia; two sisters, Patricia Ann Mintz of Gaffney and Mahala Sue Mintz Bledsoe and husband, Roger of Simpsonville; two grandchildren, Timothy John Huggin and wife, Beth, and Daniel Lee Huggin; and one great-grandchild, Leah Huggin.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William (Billy) Wood Mintz, Joe Clingman Mintz and Herschel Jack Mintz.

Services will be held Monday, March 15, at 4 p.m. at West End Baptist Church with the Revs. Rodney Cook, Joseph James, Sam Mintz and Mr. Daniel Lee Huggin officiating. Interment will be in Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery in Blacksburg.

Visitation was held Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1612 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, SC 29340; or to the charity of one's choice.
