Indians named state's best

McCrae Norton McCrae Norton How's this for topping off your senior year.

Days after capturing the school's first baseball championship, Gaffney's McCrae Norton was named as the High School Sports Report Class 4A Player of the Year.

Norton lead the Indians with a .477 batting average with three homers, 22 RBIs, 17 doubles and six triples.

He also was named to the all-state team and will play in the all-star game next month.

Norton shared the region player of the year honors with Northwestern pitcher T.J. Estes.

"He's very well deserving of the award," Gaffney High coach Jeff Osment said. "He worked hard and has been a 4-year starter for us.

"I can't think of a better way to cap your career with being named as the state player of the year."

Norton, who plays center field, has yet to announce his college decision.

He's being actively recruited by Limestone College.

Not surpringly, Osment was selected as the Class 4A Coach of the Year by the High School Sports Report after guiding the Indians to a state championship in his first year as head coach.

Proving his coolness under fire, the Indians were 7-0 when facing elimination in the state playofffs.
