Kate Smith

Substitute schoolteacher

Eva Kate Farish Smith, 84, of 356 College Drive went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 5, 2008, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of Robert Marion Smith and daughter of the late Jacob Lavelle Farish and Jessie Ellis Farish. Mrs. Smith attended Limestone College and was a substitute teacher in the Cherokee County School District, as well as a homemaker. She was a charter member of Morningside Baptist Church and attended First Baptist Church of Gaffney since 1971 where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Bob) Smith and wife, Carol W., of Columbia and Charles Farish Smith and wife, Jeanette Beauclair, of Hillsborough, N.C.; a daughter, Monica S. Lucas and husband, J. Paul, of Bedford, Texas; two brothers, Joe Farish and O.C. Farish and wife, Barbara Daniel, all of Gaffney; a sister, Ada Mae Sims of Gaffney; three grandchildren, Kate Lucas Adams and husband, Brian, of Keller, Texas, John Paul Lucas IV of Lafayette, Colo., and Robyn Marie Smith of Columbia; and three greatgrandchildren, Lucas Henry Adams, Samuel Gray Adams and Benjamin Wayne Adams, all of Keller, Texas.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 8, at 2 p.m. in Oakland Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Scott Wachter. The family will meet with friends at the graveside after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to American Cancer Society Upstate South Carolina, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615; or to the charity of one's choice.
