A trip to the state finals will be on the line this weekend when the Gaffney High track teams head to the state qualifier.

All three girls relay teams will compete Saturday in the state qualifier meet at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.

The girls track team will compete in 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relay events. The top five finishers in each event move to the state qualifier.

"Having a good showing like this in one of the toughest regions leaves us feeling optimistic about the future of both the boys and girls programs," Gaffney High girls track coach Kevin Hammett said.

The girls relay teams competing in the state qualifier consist of:

4x100 - Tiarra Morris, Shamaka Adams, Leah Fair and Quantisha Chamberlin

4x400 - Amaih Thompson, Leah Fair, Quantisha Chamberlin and Shamaka Adams

4x800 - Caroline Gordon, Holly Wolff, Alison Howard and Kristy Thompson

Hammett noted his team just missed sending competitors in several other events.

Morris finished eighth in the 100 meter race at last weekend's Region 2-4A championship. Chamberlin finished sixth in the 200 meter race.

Adams and Shanta Bell finished sixth in the 400 meter and high jump events, respectively. Thompson had her personal best time in the 800 meters.

Quiana Gibbs and LaKesha Sims finished seventh and eighth in the long jump. Sims finished sixth in the triple jump while Lacey Gardner finished in seventh place. Bell was ninth in the shot put.

The boys will be represented 12 events at the state qualifier.

Like the girls team, all three boys relay teams qualified to participate in the state qualifier.

Joe Craig qualified in the 100 and 200 meters races, Kenard Lipscomb qualified in the 400 and 800 meters.

Austin Steagall and Jamie George just missed qualifying in the 1600 and 3200 meters races, as did Jordan Manning by finishing seventh in the 110 meter hurdles. Jordan Manning finished second in the high jump while Cameron Smith finished second in the long jump.

Denzelle Good finished fifth in the shot put and second in the discus. Sherod Lipscomb finished fifth in the discus.

The boys relay teams in the state qualifier consists of:

4x100 - Cameron Smith, Joe Craig, Dennis Dawkins and Timmy Foster

4x400 - Denard Smith, Dennis Dawkins, Joe Craig and Kenard Lipscomb

4x800 - Jerquel Tate, Deon Cunningham, Chris Guyton and Kenard Lipscomb

Hammett said he hopes several of the Gaffney track team members will advance to the state meet.

"Both the boys and girls teams are very young," Hammett said. "Hopefully this will carry over to next year and allow us to continue to build this program into one of South Carolina's elite programs."
